An Internal Corporate Bootcamp - An efficient DEI tool

INTERNAL CORPORATE BOOTCAMP - All The Stars Aligned
Background of starts and The DEI Code logo

Are you finding it hard to recruit employees? Are you considering hiring graduates with no experience?

In this article, we propose an effective and proven solution that will not only help you deal with the lack of employees, but also promote diversity in your organization - make all of the stars align.

WHAT ARE BOOTCAMPS?

We know bootcamps well - bootcamps that work, that is. I was in the military, and I started my military career as the graduate of a bootcamp, a programming course they provided. All of us together, high school graduates with an affinity for computers, studied from dawn till dusk for about 8 months to become programmers of the army’s various units.

SO WHAT IS THE SOLUTION?

We would like to present a program we have put together with a few companies as part of their DEI Startegy planning and whose benefits we really believe in: Internal corporate bootcamps. These can suit everyone, and are especially a standout for diverse populations. We have based this program off of years of experience, both with recruiting employees and with consulting companies, and we are very excited about it.

The goal is to integrate employees from diverse populations and backgrounds, who either have a degree or significant training, allowing them to ‘take off’ in a better way. With this, we can both face the challenge of employee shortages and promote diversity in our organization.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

This program is tailor-made for each and every organization based on its needs, but the guiding principle of the program is its 3 main ‘content legs’:

  • Strengthening professional knowledge based on what is required by individual companies and the industry as a whole

    • Training led by experts from the company

    • Encouraging self-study

    • Relevant final projects - so students are practicing day-to-day tasks.

  • Personal growth of the participants

    • Solidifying one’s personal identity as well as professional

    • Getting acquainted with the industry, its conduct and its requirements

    • Strengthening self-confidence

  • Preparation for the industry’s sorting processes

    • Proper resume writing

    • Building or improving one’s Social Media presence

    • ‘My Story’ - effective self-presentation

    • Preparation for job interviews of all kinds

    • Accompanying in the screening and admission processes for the training graduates (as well as accompanying the hiring managers and teams as needed)

HOW DO WE KNOW IT WORKS?

We have seen that such programs focusing on specific diverse groups, for various roles and for various groups manage to yield very high results. Just to bring one example, we saw wonderful results at an internal corporate bootcamp at Amdocs, where I had the privilege of being on the leading team. The program was intended for software developers, graduates of relevant degrees, with disAbilities. All graduates of the bootcamp - one hundred percent of them - were able to successfully integrate into high-tech companies as developers!

WHAT ARE THE OTHER BENEFITS?

Outside of recruiting employees from wider circles, the focus of the bootcamp contributes to investing in corporate social responsibility and branding the company as a groundbreaking organization, which helps in recruiting more employees.

Even within the organization, in the complex struggle of employee retention that companies face, the model gives real value to the employees and managers involved in such an exciting process. Naturally, the employees brought in from the bootcamp will also greatly appreciate the investment in them and will happily stay in the organization for years to come.

In addition, an organization’s investment in this program will allow them to start a positive discourse on diversity and inclusion. Workers will pay more attention to the organization’s commitment to being more inclusive and recruiting a wider range of employees, and it will allow others to feel more comfortable with their situation and to open up about it to others if needed.
